Are Liposuction Clinics A Good Option?

Liposuction clinics have gotten quite busy lately due the rise in popularity of cosmetic surgery, and liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure. Over 300,000 people had some kind of liposuction procedure performed last year. If you take into account the economy, with the nationwide recession, that gives you some idea as to how popular liposuction truly is.

Simply put, liposuction is the removal of fatty tissue. The procedures go by many different names, including lipoplasty, suction lipectomy and lipo. There are many variations on the procedures available with most being minimally invasive. The cost of a liposuction procedure varies, but generally ranges from $1500 to $7500. This cost is dependent on many factors, including the geographical location, experience of the surgeon, and the facility where the liposuction procedure is performed.

Do not be mistaken, liposuction is a surgical procedure, but it is far less invasive and traumatic than many other cosmetic surgery options. It doesn’t require major incisions or the implanting of large, foreign objects within the body. It’s performed with tiny cannulas, needles that are attached to a vacuum device. Usually, tumescent fluid (a mixture of epinephrine, anesthetic and salt water) is injected into the fatty tissue deposits first, making the fat easier to suction out. In the majority of cases it is performed under local anesthesia, making it an excellent procedure for a clinic rather than a hospital.

A liposuction procedure can be safely performed in a clinic as well as in a hospital. Where your liposuction takes place will probably depend on the surgeon you choose. Some surgeons have fully staffed clinics, while others rely on local hospitals. Either choice is a good one, provided you know the pros and cons.

The positive to a clinic setting is its personal attention and homey atmosphere for the patients. But, some patients prefer the hospital setting, just in case something goes wrong. Unfortunately, hospitals also carry a higher risk of infection due to the other sick patients with varies diseases and they tend to be busier. Individual clinics can seem somewhat less professional, but most have been accredited by the state and offer stellar care.

Whatever your preference, whether it’s a clinic or hospital, the largest factor in choosing a location for liposuction should always be the skill and experience level of the surgeon performing the procedure. It’s important to research your surgeon thoroughly. Choosing a reputable surgeon is a much better guarantee for good results with no complications, than any specific location.
