Male Liposuction – Important Facts You Need To Know

Male liposuction is become more and more popular as new statistics show that it’s not just women who are seeking the treatment for removal of fat tissue.  Traditionally, those seeking to improve the look of their bodies through cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non surgical, have been women. However, in 2005 the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that twelve percent of the liposuction procedures performed were done so on men. This number continues to rise as men are increasingly more likely to seek this method of body contouring.

Liposuction for men is particularly effective in several areas. The first is for the part of the body known as love handles, as well as in the chest area. It is also common for men to have fatty deposits removed from the abdomen. These sections of the body are areas where men have a difficult time with targeted weight loss, in spite of diet and exercise.

Although these are the most common areas, more and more men are utilizing liposuction for areas of their face and neck. It is becoming more common place to see men ask for procedures on their chin, neck and jowls. Removing excess fat from these areas can combat the effects of aging and give the patient a more youthful and well rested appearance.

The cost of male liposuction does run slightly more than that of the same procedure for women. There are several reasons for this and none have to do with gender bias. The first is the fact that fatty deposits in men are slightly more fibrous than women, so the actual procedure takes a little longer and is a little more difficult to perform. This is particularly true in the areas generally targeted by men; the abdomen, chest and back.

The second reason for the cost discrepancy is the fact that, in general, men are larger than women so they usually carry more fat in the areas to be treated. The amount of fatty tissue removed always directly affects the cost of liposuction procedures.

Liposuction is also used, in conjunction with other procedures, for the treatment of gynecomastia. This is the abnormal enlargement of the male breast. Although gynecomastia is usually caused by a hormonal imbalance, it can also be caused by the accumulation of glandular and fatty tissue in the breast. Liposuction can be very effective in reducing the volume of male breasts and has the added benefit of leaving tiny or virtually invisible scars.

Whatever procedure you choose, it’s important to find a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in liposuction for men.
